Romy Deighton

Romy Deighton is the daughter of Matt Deighton, and there are some musical gifts that skip a generation — and some that clearly don’t. Growing up in the orbit of one of Britain’s most quietly revered singer-songwriters, Romy made her debut live performance at the Karamel Club in 2012, aged just sixteen, accompanied by her father on guitar. It was, by all accounts, the most natural thing in the world.

She has since become one of the most warmly regarded voices in the Monks Road Social family, appearing across multiple albums in the collective’s catalogue. On the Out of Bounds album she delivers a stunning version of Mother Earth’s “Jesse” that stops listeners in their tracks. On Rise Up Singing! she sings “Spirit Level” — a co-write with Dr Robert that also features Orphy Robinson on vibraphone — and gives Paul Weller’s “Serafina” a reading so beautiful it prompted one reviewer to simply write: “Just beautiful.”

What makes Romy’s presence on these records so special is that it feels entirely earned rather than inherited. She brings her own quiet authority to everything she sings — a voice that is both luminous and grounded, belonging entirely to her. Monks Road Records is proud to be part of her story from the very beginning.
